Why chaplaincy –
Chaplaincy news
We were delighted that 12 people took up the offer of a free Chaplaincy training course held over the Autumn and we will be exploring new areas of Chaplaincy as a result. A follow up presentation of DVDs, showing Chaplaincy at work elicited the same response.
Chaplaincy
CIGB responds to the economic life of Birmingham and Solihull in three broad ways
- providing workplace chaplains to a wide range of organisations
- working on a key economic issues
- helping churches to support and resource employed Christians
In 2007 our chaplaincy provision continued to grow. We also worked on issues surrounding migrant workers, resulting in the ‘Here to stay?’ event and booklet. You can read about our work in detail in our Annual Report.

Why chaplaincy – For Business
Organisations which care for their staff and which have clear corporate values are organisations that thrive.
Chaplains can play a key role in these areas by – offering informal pastoral support to staff, complementing any other provision; developing an understanding of the business and so understanding the pressures people face; assisting with diversity issues; contributing to discussions on values and culture.
The very presence of a chaplain indicates that a company cares about its people and about its values.
Projects & current developments
Exploring Climate Change
Climate change is going to effect all our futures and how we organise our economy is going to be key to meeting the challenge. Climate change will alterhow we work and how we consume. CIGB will be exploring this area over the next year. Other elements of the church are working on awareness of this issue.
Birmingham City Centre
Elaine Hutchinson took up her role as City Centre Chaplain recently, followed by a commissioning service at St Martin’s in the Bullring on Saturday 30th January which was very well attended by family, friends and CIGB chaplains. We wish Elaine well in her future endeavours. Eight volunteers completed the ‘Introduction to chaplaincy’ course and soon we hope to have six chaplains working in the city centre.
Solihull Town Centre
The Solihull Town Centre team has produced a video of their work, aimed at retailers and faith communities. The 12 minute video gives an insight into the retail environment of Solihull and explains the value of the chaplains work. Members of the team are happy to share the video with business and faith groups. A copy is also available on loan from the CIGB office.
