Young adults have been particularly badly affected by the rise in unemployment during the recession and will continue to be affected for some time to come. This can have a long term impact on their working lives and careers.

One of the major barriers to employment is a lack of working experience. The Future Jobs Fund addresses this by giving people six months experience in a real job that would not otherwise be done and which has community value. For instance, a company or voluntary sector organisation may need work done on a particular project, or there may be space for additional staff in a Youth Group or a growing admin load that needs more hours.

The young person receives the minimum wage for 30 hours a week, which includes 25 hours work and 5 hours job search and other skills. The job supplier provides supervision and a worthwhle job and receives the funding for pay and support costs. Future Jobs employees range from those needing support in getting into working habits to highly motivated graduates. The employer interviews and appoints in the usual way.

The Anglican Diocese is planning to support parishes involved in Future Jobs by providing a central employment / pay role facility.

To learn more contact Jo Bagby in the Diocesan Regeneration Department – 0121 426 0443 or Richard Trengrouse, Be Birmingham – 0121 303 8103.
